Before you write
Reporting a wrong number? Please include the page URL, the inputs you used and the result you expected. That turns a fix into a five minute job instead of a reconstruction. Corrections are the most useful mail we get, and reference charts in particular get revised the same week when somebody sends us a manufacturer page that disagrees with us.
Asking what line your rod takes? Tell us the rod's printed line class, length and action, and whether the line you have now feels dead close in or sloppy at distance. Without those, any answer is a guess. The line weight calculator and the leader and tippet calculator will usually get you an answer faster than we can by email.
We cannot give safety instruction over email. Everything here is researched guidance, not professional instruction. We will not tell anyone by email that a specific crossing on a specific river is safe on a specific day, because that requires somebody standing on the bank looking at the water. Wading questions belong with a local guide or the agency that manages the water. See our disclaimer and the wading safety guide.
Regulations change and we are not the authority on them. Felt sole bans, licences, seasons and gear restrictions vary by state, province and even by individual water, and they change. Always confirm with the agency that manages the water you intend to fish. If you find a page here that is out of date on a regulation, please tell us and we will fix it.
Missing a rod? The rod spec index grows by request. Send the brand and model and we will add it, with any figure we cannot confirm left out rather than guessed at.
